inspireEveryone runs out of ideas at some point in time. And imitation is the sincerest form of flattery right. Well, here are four sites you can browse when you need some design inspiration.

csswebsite: "Css Website is an innovative gallery of simple websites. Its purpose is to showcase designer’s work and to expand the CSS design community. We propose a classification by color and contents for a better usability." (from their About page)
They have a nice assortment of web sites to gain inspiration from. You can browse by Color, by Content, by Date, or just type in a search term. They also allow you to rate each site 1 to 5 stars.

headingsSo, we've learned how to setup the basic shell for an HTML document and add a little text. Now we can get into a little more of the formatting for our site's content. I briefly mentioned block-level elements in the previous basics post when we used the <p> tag. Specifically, a block-level element displays our content in a separate section within the page. So, basically it's just setting it off from other items or blocks. The elements we will be using today just happen to be block-level elements. You will see how they separate from other sections of content. Enough with the chit-chat let's get going.

The trendy/popular thing right now seems to be this 'web 2.0 style' of graphics. You'll see that a lot of the web 2.0 style images have things like highlights, gradients, reflections, shadows, and even stripes - along with just an over all clean yet almost bubbly style. So, let's see what we can come up.

If you're looking to get started learning HTML the good old 'Hello World' is a fine place to start. I'll take you through the simple steps of setting up a very basic HTML web page. We will just display a simple line of text saying… Hello World!

So, let's get started. Here is what you need:

  • Text Editor - I'll be using NotePad
  • Internet Browser - Firefox for me, but Internet Explorer is fine

You don't need much - here we go…

web design toolsIf you're just getting into web design, you've got to start somewhere. Before you start with the books and the tutorials you might want to pick up a few web design tools to use along your way. Well, actually you are definitely going to need a couple of these tools to get started.

There are a lot of tools to choose from. Some cost money, some are free, some color code, some don't - I'll list a few here, but really the best thing to do is just try them out. Find which one fits you best. If you don't like any of the ones I list just do a quick Google search.
